Heartburn affects millions of Americans every day. Heartburn symptoms are similar to those of a heart attack, however, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. It is commonly created by acid reflux, a condition where contents of the stomach come back up into the esophagus. Heartburn creates a burning pain in the lower chest and throat. You may also experience a rising pain or a foul acrid taste in the mouth. If you experience heartburn regularly, you most likely have gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Recurring acid reflux can indicate other underlying health issues and is dangerous to your health. It can lead to laryngitis, a long-term cough, inflammation of the esophagus, problems swallowing, and esophageal cancer. GERD can affect people of all ages and is often associated with smoking, alcohol, and obesity. Lack of sleep and stress are also factors that can raise acid in your stomach. It can happen after eating large meals or lying down within 2-3 hours of eating a meal. Heartburn can last for a few minutes or several hours. There are several foods that can increase stomach acid and trigger heartburn including:

1. Milk

Researchers believe that milk allergy and GERD are linked. In 2011, a study was done regarding cow’s milk and acid reflux. Over 90% of the participants experienced heartburn due to acid reflux. Half of the heartburn suffers still experienced symptoms after taking a medication to reduce stomach acid. After eliminating milk from their diets, the participants showed significant improvement in their symptoms. If dairy is contributing to your heartburn, you should consider using a dairy substitute. Dairy substitutes are made from a base of flax, cashew, soy, almond, hemp, or rice. You can find them in the health food section of most grocery stores.
