Get Up & Walk!

Walking is one of the best exercises you can do. As we all know, finding time to do this isn’t always easy. You may have a job that requires you to sit at a desk all day, or you may be a student who is sitting in class five days a week. Nevertheless, you need to make some time to get up and take a walk. Whether it be a walk around the track or a walk around the parking lot of your office building during lunch, walking has numerous health benefits that everyone should enjoy.

When you get up and get in motion, your body will respond in a positive way. It can help you to lose or maintain your weight. Walking is a wonderful way to relieve stress and elevate your mood. It can lower the risks of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Overall, it improves your well-being.

How Much Do I Need To Walk?

It is best to walk for 30 minutes, at least five times per week. You can break this up if you need to by taking a walk for 10 minutes, three times per day, or 15 minutes, twice per day. It isn’t always necessary to hop on the treadmill every time you need to walk. If you have a few minutes at work, try taking a walk around the office! Need something from the store a few blocks away? Walk there instead of driving. By getting in the habit of taking a short walk whenever possible, you’ll find that you are getting your necessary steps without even trying.

What Happens If We Sit Down For Too Long?

An unfortunate fact is that many people sit down for a majority of the day. In addition to sitting at work, we are sitting on our morning and afternoon commutes, and sitting for a few hours in the evening. By the end of the day, we have hardly walked at all. Sitting for too long can have serious effects. The risk of cancer rises significantly in inactive people. The risk of diabetes also increases. People tend to gain unhealthy amounts of weight when they sit too much. The likeliness of brain damage increases, as does back pain and weak, brittle bones. Ultimately, sitting too much causes the body to age faster, reducing the quality of life.

By making a little extra effort, we can get in the exercise we need. Make a conscious effort to stand up whenever possible. Take frequent breaks at work and get a few steps in. Instead of turning on the television when you get home from work, take a stroll around the block. Or, get up a half hour earlier in the morning and take a quiet walk around the neighborhood to get your day started.

No matter how you decide to get your steps in, your body will thank you. Taking a walk is one of the best things that anyone can do.
